TheatreHD finishes the broadcasting season

The last live broadcasts of performances from Metropolitan Opera and The Bolshoi Theatre in this season will be shown in April in Minsk. Madame Butterfly by Anthony Minghella, the director of the film The English Patient, aristocratic Roberto Devereux by Gaetano Donizetti, expressionistic Elektra by Richard Strauss, vibrant Don Quixote choreographed by Marius Petipa.  The screening of Hamlet, the most famous Shakespeare’s tragedy, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will be dedicated to the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.

The opera Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, in which exotic Japanese culture and Italian musical tradition join together, will open the April screenings. In 2006 the director of this opera was Anthony Minghella well known as the film director of The English Patient, Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Since then several casts changed, but Kristine Opolais who sings the part of Cio-Cio San is already being called the best singer of this part over the last 30 years.

The spectators could see The Queen not even in The Audience where Oscar-winning Helen Mirren plays, but also in Roberto Devereux opera. World-famous soprano in bel canto repertoire Sondra Radvanovsky will sing the part of Elizabeth I. Minsk spectators will watch it at the same time with the first performance at Metropolitan Opera in New-York.

For the first time Hangmen, staged on the play by Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh, will be shown in Minsk cinemas. He is well known for the In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths films. Hangmen is a story about executioner Harry who stayed without job after the abolition of capital punishment by hanging. The performance is nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award in two categories: Best Director and Best New Play.

Traditionally, the project includes the broadcastings of the number of performances based on the Shakespeare’s plays. At the beginning of April the spectators will be able to watch the first night of Julius Caesar from the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The screening of Hamlet, beloved by Minsk spectators will be dedicated to the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and a few days later, they will manage to watch The Comedy of Errors from the Globe. Before the two last screenings spectators will see the unique 15-minute video-lectures by expert of Shakespeare's work Alexei Bartoshevich. These videos had been created with support of the Arzamas educating project.
Also, the performances The Importance of Being Earnest, As You Like It and Coriolanus will be rebroadcasted in April.

A beautiful ballet Don Quixote with the original choreography by legendary ballet-master Marius Petipa will be shown in April. The scenery for this performance had been created on the base of sketches of the People's Artist of the USSR Valery Leventhal. This ballet is one of the oldest in the repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre and on 10 April it will play out in fresh colors on the big screen.

On the last day of April in the Centralny cinema the spectators will be able to watch the opera Electra directed by Metropolitan Opera. Richard Strauss refused the traditional musical language in his modernist works and offered a totally new, impulsive and expressionistic melody. The author of performance is Patrice Chéreau, French film and theater director, winner of the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlinale. This first night at Metropolitan Opera became the last work of Patrice Chéreau, that’s why it is so symbolic that this performance will close the broadcast  season in New York.
